Infrared energy is just one part of the electromagnetic spectrum that encompasses radiation from gamma rays, x-rays, ultra violet, a thin region of visible light, infrared, terahertz waves, microwaves, and radio waves.
Light which has a longer wavelength than red is called infrared, and light which has a shorter wavelength than violet is called ultra violet or UV.
This is an Ultra Violet absorbing filter that helps overcome the abundance of blue in outdoor photographs. Not really necessary in digital photography as the camera's white balance system adjusts for the colour temperature of the scene.
UV stands for Ultra Violet and the UV filter works to not let this wavelength enter the lens. The benefit of that is the minimization of haze in your pictures (caused, for example, by taking photos while facing the sun).
Ordinary emulsion
