UMBRELLAS: Incorporating the use of an umbrella is the means by which most photographers begin their endeavor into studio lighting as they are inexpensive and easy to use. They create a nice wrap around effect producing evenly lit subjects.

A photographic umbrella is a kind of light modifier used to provide soft lighting. There are two kinds of umbrella: reflective and shoot-through. A reflective umbrella has a silver, white or gold surface on the inside.

Another source of diffusing the light from a flash unit is an umbrella. The use is similar to that of a Softbox except that the diffusion ability is slightly lesser.

Umbrella: A lighting accessory consisting of reflective fabric stretched over a metal frame. Used to reflect soft, even light onto a subject.

Umbrella (for Lights)
Appropriate umbrellas convert hard or broad lights into large soft sources.

Umbrellas, basically large reflectors, are used to bounce the flash. As the flash from the small flash unit hits the large umbrella and reflects back onto the subject, it is softened.
Flash Extenders ...

Umbrellas in flash photography are simply convenient, collapsible reflectors. Lighting, including light from a flash, can be hard or soft. And the hardness or softness basically comes down to the size of the area emitting the light.

The umbrella is directly in front and above the subject instead of to the side. And this technique utilizes the close proximity of the flash and umbrella like the technique above. I was situated close to the subject as well with a 50mm lens.

Some umbrellas are made of a gold-coloured reflective surface and can be used to add warmth to skin tones. Other devices, such as softboxes, can be used to achieve similar results.

You might need these if your lights are close to the original, as you move the lights further back, they don't matter as much. I generally use them, but then I already have them.

Flash, or flashgun, is a word for a device used in still photography for giving a strong bright light onto a photographed scene for just the moment of exposure.

Common accessories are as follows: diffusers, barn doors, snoots, and umbrellas. If accessories are not available, compromises in the lighting can alter the effect and quality you desire. Diffusers.

Shooting a studio-type portrait with the 283 and an umbrella on a tripod is easy but you must remove the flash sensor and position it outside the umbrella area, at least if you want to use one of the Auto flash settings.

I used a Hasselblad and a 150mm lens, with one light in an umbrella to the right of my subject (camera left) and balanced the daylight coming in from a large window behind the subject with the exposure of the strobe.

You, a lounge chair, and a tropical drink with an umbrella. Sound like paradise? Then plant yourself poolside in Sin City. Las Vegas might just be America’s coolest landlocked beach resort.

Set up two strobes with umbrellas to create an even illumination across the background; meter it to make sure.

This means that you can control the light in interesting ways by using umbrellas and soft boxes to diffuse the light and soften the shadows, whilst still getting a reasonable exposure at a small aperture.

The lighting for portraiture is typically diffused by bouncing it from the inside of an umbrella, or by using a soft box. The soft box is essentially a strobe encased in an opaque box and one side is made of translucent fabric material.

An ordinary umbrella works well but does take a hand to hold. You can also buy commercial rain hoods for your camera and lens (Kirk and LL Rue carry good ones made by A. Laird for instance).

My favorite setups use large, hard lighting with either an umbrella, parabolic reflector, or fresnel with a rim light on the cheekbones and a separation/hairlight bringing the subject out of the background.

Obviously I have to protect my camera from getting too wet, and I do this with an umbrella and/or a clear plastic shower cap with an elastic band. I also carry a microfiber cloth so I can constantly wipe the lens clean.

In the studio, where umbrellas and soft boxes can create huge surfaces that reflect off surfaces like crazy, the solution is simple: Have the sitter tilt her head down or away slightly so the glasses reflect the light source away from your lens.

I have married them with some basic lighting stands from Manfrotto, the Manfrotto Light-tite umbrella adapters and cheap shoot-through umbrellas that I bought from eBay for under £15.

Use soft lighting such as from a flash umbrella or a sunset. Make sure there is enough light to eliminate any shadows and produce a clear photo.

You'll likely be surprised at how great a candid photo of you and your partner loading groceries into the car, crossing the street under an umbrella or even cleaning up the house looks.

So, I took out an umbrella and set up my equipment while it was still raining. Then, I held the umbrella over my equipment and me and waited for a break in the rain. Eventually, the rain stopped, and I got my shot.

If you're taking photos throughout the day, try moving your baby under the shade of a tree or umbrella. Alternatively, if you're taking photos indoors, try moving towards a window to utilize the light from outside.

Light bounced into a reflective surface (a wall, a ceiling, a studio umbrella, a card) to illuminate a subject with softer light, reducing harsh shadows.

For example, a crowd of umbrellas on a rainy day or a line of aspen trees reflected on the surface of a lake.

Bounce Lighting, generally used in portrait photography, is lighting that bounces off a particular source (such as an umbrella, wall or blank drop down sheet) to surround the central object with light.

The use of umbrellas and various diffusion equipments will help you to pick the harshness of the shadows on your subject. Backgrounds have always played an important role bringing out the details in a portrait photograph.
