Probably the most useful is Unsharp Mask as many images captured with a digicam will benefit from some level of sharpening. This filter enhances visibility of boundaries between light and dark tones in an image.

USM - Abbreviation for UnSharp Masking, a means of creating additional definition in the edge transition areas of an image in order to retain detail.

Applying unsharp mask to an image shot on the D50's lowest sharping setting, as recommended in Imaging Resource's review, doesn't help. Are Dslr cameras with their poorer depth of field at any given aperture inherently more difficult to use?

If you use the "unsharp mask" you get better results but often what you most wanted sharpened takes second place to some random background object that was sharpened more.

If an image looks soft, it can often be improved by sharpening, a process (technically called unsharp masking) that adds contrast along lines and edges.

The next step is Adobe Photoshop editing, which is all pretty straight-forward: Levels and curves for contrast, airbrushing, and finally some Unsharp mask (see my article on USM for more info than you ever wanted) to sharpen the image.

So all you need to do is to apply a little sharpening (eg: "unsharp mask") to your pictures and they should look quite sharp and crisp.
