A USB flash drive - also known as USB drive, pen drive, thumb drive, key drive or jump drive - is an excellent way to transfer photos from one computer to another.

USB Port - Universal Serial Bus. This is a port on the back (or maybe front) of your computer that allows the connection of other USB devices. Most digital cameras use the USB port to transfer pictures from the camera to the computer.

USB (Universal Serial Bus) Connection
Most digital cameras connect to a computer and transfer image files with either a serial connection or a USB connection. Serial connections are generally slower than USB connections.

USB port
A digital port for connecting devices (i.e. computers, cameras, scanners, printers) using a USB cable. Using a USB port is 40 times faster than a serial port connection.

is an abbreviation of Universal Serial Bus. USB is a standard port that enables you to connect external devices (such as digital cameras, scanners, and mice) to Windows 98 and Macintosh computers.

3. A USB Connection
Look for a USB connection instead of a serial connection. Serial connections can be very slow when you start downloading the images to your computer. This can be rather painful if you have over 20 pictures or so.

Toshiba External USB Hard Drives
Toshiba is another one of those companies well known for making internal hard drives for laptops and desktop computers, but until now it's kind of been a big secret.

FireWire card readers are typically faster than those that connect via USB. Also known as IEEE 1394, FireWire was invented by Apple Computer but is now commonly used with Windows-based PCs as well.

SCSI port - Small Computer System Interface A port that's faster than the serial and parallel ports, harder to configure than the newer USB port. Mostly used for fast disk connections.

USB 1.1 - USB was the first widespread high speed method of data transfer from cameras. It is theoretically capable of transfer speeds up to 11 megabits/second (note megabits not megabytes). Not used on current cameras.

You had a USB cable, a card reader-maybe USB or FireWire-and you were done. Images could move from camera to computer fast and easy. Times have changed, and now DSLRs can connect to TVs, projectors, computers and other devices.

I used a card reader, but if you are a fan of connecting via USB, that will work as well. The larger of the two firmware files is less than four megabytes so the size of the card doesn't matter.

A simple USB A to mini B cable is going to work with any digital EOS camera that uses USB, but a proprietary data cable (such as the ones Nikon build for their cameras which use Nikon-specific connectors) will not be useful.

Thumb Drive
A Thumb Drive is one name for a USB Flash Chip. Other nicknames are Jump Drive and USB Keychain. The Thumb Drive comes in various sizes, like 256mb, and plugs into a computer's USB port. It's like having a pocket hard drive.

The device features two hard drivebays, a memory card reader (SD/XD/MMX/MS), three USB 2.0 ports, an eSATA port and Gigabit Ethernet and is also compatible with PCs, Macs and Linux machines.

After you import your images from your camera to your computer (usually via a USB cable), you should have those pictures stored in your hard drive. Hard drives are pretty cheap these days.

5. Most digital cameras come with a USB interface to transfer digital photos from camera to computer. If you will be transferring large high quality photo files, try to get USB 2.0 to speed things up.
