the top or back of a process camera that includes a suction device to hold photographic paper or film in place during exposure.

 


Vacuum back is a camera back with a perforated plate through which air is drawn by a pump. A sheet of film is therefore sucked flat against the plate and held firmly during exposure.

There is also a vacuum back which will hold the film flat and more importantly, still. These cameras are expensive new, but do come up from time to time on the auction site. If you are doing survey work, making ortho images, etc...
