The Value Of Brightness/Contrast
How a much maligned adjustment tool can help you work images like a darkroom master
By Rob Sheppard ...

Light Value (LV) and Exposure Value (EV) are numerical scales for measuring the amount of light, and the exposure, respectively.

Exposure Values (EV)
Exposure value refers to the amount of light for a given exposure. It is denoted as a single number.

Contrast values
A perceived difference between the light areas (highlights) and the dark areas (shadows) of a scene. The range of contrast levels between the highlights and the shadows is called Contrast Values.

The Casio QV-3000EX is a camera which performs beyond your expectations of it, it's big on features, big on lens and image quality and offers excellent bang for the buck.

value
the relative lightness or darkness of a color measured against a neutral gray scale (ranges from 0 for pure black to 10 for pure white).
value scale
a complete range of values from black to white.

Value
A measure from white to black, the higher the value, the darker the image.
Vanishing point
Is the point at which parallel lines, viewed obliquely, appear to converge in the distance.

Value: lightness and darkness of the color - the amount of white or black added.
Intensity: the purity or saturation of the color
Monochromatic color: use of one color where only the value of the color changes ...

Value used to describe the maximum density in an image.

Values are for ideal contrast and lighting, and use the Canon 300mm f/2.8 IS L lens.

Value - Describes how light or dark a color is. Value can be used interchangeably with the term brightness. A pale yellow color will seem lighter than dark blue.

The values produced by a monitor from black to white are nonlinear. If you graph the values, they form a curve, not a straight line. Gamma defines the slope of that curve at halfway between black and white.

The value in common snapshots and portraits lies mostly in the associations we have with them. Portraits of our ancestors interest us more than unidentified portraits.

The value of a pixel in an electronic image, representing its lightness value from black to white. Usually defined as brightness levels ranging in value from 0 (black) to 255 (white).

The value here is in hexadecimal so this is actually 150 pixels (decimal). Regedit.exe lets you enter values in decimal so you don't have to get out a calculator. Legal values are between 32 and 256 decimal.

The value of the color sampler is shown on the Info palette (see Figure 8).

The value of saturation + hue of a pixel; its colour.
Chromatic Aberration
In digital imaging most often seen as unwanted purplish lines along edges separating dark and light areas.

The value of the irrational number Phi can also be described as (sqrt(5)+1)/2 by those of a mathematical bent.

Gray Value: The number (usually between 0 and 256) that specifies a particular shade of gray.
Gripper Margin: The unprintable blank edge on which the paper is gripped as it passes through a printing press. Usually measures a half inch or less.

Tone values - various shades of gray between the extremes of black & white in a photographic image.
Toning - method of soaking the print in selenium or similar chemical(s) to help give the print an overall feeling of "richness".

F-stop values are traditionally incremented by stops. Each stop is a standard value that allows half as much light through as the previous stop and twice as much light as the next stop.

*) ISO value: "Normal" film is 100 or 200 ISO. If you go to a store and buy some 800 film, the film will be more sensitive to light, and you will in many situations get away with not having to use a flash

-Light value - alternative term for exposure value (EV).
-Limiting aperture - actual size of the aperture formed by the iris diaphragm at any setting.

Typical Values:

Exposure value (EV)
Scale of values used to indicate the sensitivity range of a TTL or off-camera meter system within which accurate exposure measurement is guaranteed. The lower the number the more sensitive the meter is to low light.

Exposure Value (EV)
The "Exposure Value" (EV) is the common unit to explain exposure differences so it's useful to understand its concept. In simple words: 1 EV difference is identical with either +-1 f-stop or the half or double shutter speed.

Exposure value. Method of quantifying scene brightness. Most of these value apply to metering cells, how high or low eg.

Items of value, including photography equipment, that are not covered or have limited coverage on standard homeowners policies may be scheduled on a personal articles floater.

Exposure Value
An arbitrary method of incremental measurement that can be adjusted on some digital cameras for more precise exposure control.

Exposure Value
On some cameras the exposure value (EV) can be adjusted to give you more control of the amount of light that is used when taking a picture.

Exposure value when spot - metering circle is moved.
Exposure value set by user, with value set by selected metering method as 0.

Exposure Value (EV) Exposure Value (EV) represents a ratio of all possible combinations of film speed and aperture settings that can render any given exposure. While the film speed will determine the degree ...

EXPOSURE VALUE - The Exposure Value (EV) system, which originated in Germany in the 1950s, was created to be a simple-to-use substitute for the shutter speed/aperture combination, using a single number instead of two.

A small f/value (e.g. f/2.8) indicates a large aperture.
A large f/value (e.g. f/8) indicates a small aperture.
So, f/2.8 is a larger aperture than f/8.

Brightness. Value of a pixel in a digital image giving its value of lightness from black to white, with o being black and 255 being white.

EV, Exposure Value
A system of light measurement in which each whole number is 1 Stop more or less than its neighbors; used by many meter makers.

Standard JPEG
Value here apply to most JPEG images. This is adjusted to the standard 2-1-1 subsampling.
At this point you may stop reading if you don't need to know any more details.

EV - Exposure Value, a very complex thing but in the digital camera world it usually means the ability to override the auto exposure system to lighten or darken an image.

The reflectance value of the D1/X/H's CCD and shielding filter, which have taken the place of film in the D1, is not the same as film, and therein lies the root of the D1/X/H's problem with foolproof flash exposure.

The numerical tonal values for R, G and B are displayed as you move the cursor around the image. In point sample mode (called pixelzoom) you can select the exact pixel that you want to sample.

Also referred to as value - it is the scale of lightness or darkness at any given area of a print. Cold (blue) and warm tones (red) are often used to describe the colour of the image in both black and white and colour photographs.
Toning ...

Exposure Value; A number that represents available combinations of shutter speed and aperture offering the same exposure effect when scene brightness remains the same. Each EV number can be applied to various shutter speed and aperture combinations.

At any rate, the temperature values were a LOT LESS critical. Room temps were fine. I believe the range was 75-90 degrees, or 70-85, or thereabouts.

8 II Lens - for its price perhaps the best value lens in terms of the quality of output.
Canon EF 50mm f1.4 USM Standard & Medium Telephoto Lens - a step up from the f/1.8 in terms of build quality and results but more expensive.

Value The reflectance, density or luminosity of a part of an image, from black to white. In common speech, "brightness". One of the three parameters of the HSV (Hue/Saturation/Value) system for describing colors. (See also, Dynamic Range).

There are smaller and larger f-numbers but the actual numbers used are always the same and will maintain a constant value over different lens focal lengths.

If the focal plane is in front of the camera lens relative to the image surface (front focus), the distance between the two images will be narrower than the optimum value.

When the Sabatier exposure is strong, the optical density in the film or paper approaches a high value on going to very low initial exposure values.

This is further confirmed with the RGB values taken from the neutral gray area in the background using the info palette in Adobe Photoshop.

The aperture ring of a typical 50mm lens has the following values etched onto it: 1.4, 2.0, 2.8, 4, 5.6, 8, 11, 16, and 22.

Ironically, it is this which gives additional instances value. By contrast, rather than making multiple child images, you could make just one, destroy the negative, and then (assuming the image has artistic value), ...

Instead of metering the snow, lock in a meter reading taken off a mid-tone value in the scene - such as a grey rock, building or pavement, if any are visible! ...

LUT (Look-up table) a 2 or 3 dimensional array of values stored for specified input-output relationships. When one input value is known, the system can automatically determine the correct output value.

Once, I received a package of promotional materials (freebie stuff), but the shipper marked a dollar value for the shipment instead of just declaring the items as free promotional material and I got dinged by UPS for brokerage and Canadian taxes so ...

A scanner's dynamic range is measured by the manufacturer and expressed as a numeric value between 0.0 (white) to 4.0 (black) that indicates its ability to capture all values within the full dynamic range.

If it simply makes the three new pixels the same value as the one original then the image will start to look blocky like a mosaic.
