Most images taken by amateur photographers are taken at eye level - this means most of these pictures are taken from the narrow range of 5 to 6 feet in height.

When composing your image the first thing you want to think about is where you are shooting from. Before you start shooting you should always think to yourself 'Am I in a place that will allow me to capture the best possible images?

The vantage point from which the original photographer took the view may have disappeared over the years, so the rephotographer has to choose an original view for which the vantage point is still accessible, ...

High vantage points offer a bit more of a challenge but net a lot of impact when utilized. A safe way to create the effect is to photograph from the second story of your home or find an apartment or office building and photograph from a high point.

This vantage point is for experienced photographers only. Graham first shot from the back of a motorbike in 1987, 10 years after he first saw a Tour.

High vantage points, for example, help organize complex scenes. At street level, faces and signs in a crowded marketplace dominate, making the scene chaotic.

Choosing Your Vantage Point
Even if you're satisfied with one shot at a single angle, experiment with other vantage points. Reposition your subject and then reposition yourself.

Extreme long shots should normally be taken from a high vantage point, such as from a tall building, a hilltop, or an aircraft. Extreme long shots are used primarily in films and are seldom used in video productions.

Everybody scrambled to get the best vantage point to observe the bull while at the same time leaving enough distance so as not to rile him. He was brushing up against trees, stepping over everything and making his way through camp.

At some tracks there are also elevated viewing points, called towers, that can provide great photography vantage points for both pros and amateurs.

With any one lens, your choice of aperture controls the depth of field for a given subject from a fixed vantage point; a larger aperture results in less depth of field, and a smaller aperture results in greater depth of field.

Finally, I wanted to change my vantage point slightly to bring in more elements from the background and come in tighter on Candra.

As when shooting sunsets and other panoramic views, it's often a good idea to include interesting, recognizable objects in your photo.

Afterward, I decided to take some additional shots from the same vantage point, only this time without the LitePanel in place for comparative purposes. Tamara helped Nola walk around the grass a bit while I took the LitePanel gear down.

The trick to making light rays stand out is to carefully plan your vantage point. Light rays will be most apparent if you are located close to (but not at) where you can see the light source directly.

If you do not have this luxury however, a quick internet search can provide a wealth of information, from possible vantage points, to the busiest and quietest times of day.

The articulated screen makes it easy to shoot from a low vantage point without having to bend down. The screen can also be tilted downward to make it easier to shoot from above.

You get the feeling you're looking at the crowd from this couple's vantage point. I love how the photographer chose to tell a story with this photo rather than just shooting the crowd below.

Of course, down-on-the-ground is not always the vantage point you'll want - and if you've got arthritis like me, there's always the added pain of having to get back up again.

Sometimes the best vantage point may be only a step away. Learn to crop out things in the viewfinder before they find their way into the picture. With these simple techniques, your images will start to improve drastically.

Also, look for interesting vantage points. Elements like roads, fences and trees help draw viewers into a picture and direct their eyes to the subject matter. Finally, take a lot of pictures to guarantee that you get the one you want.

Move around or about. Also try pictures from a low or high vantage point.

If you are within the protest you'll have a great vantage point for various expressions of the spectators. From outside the protest you'll most likely focus on profiles of spectators or a line of spectators stretching down the street.

Those boring vases or tables will take on new life if you're able to grasp the concepts of using different vantage points and zooms. Do yourself a favor, amateur or not, this is a must buy if you're at all serious about your photography.

and the way the sun illuminates the edges of the mesas with golden light gives the image an artistry that sets it apart. Each ridge is defined in light, and that helps underscore the wonderful graphic design that we see from this vantage point.

As an example, I'm not fond of carrying the camera mounted on the tripod. If I want to photograph a scenic subject from more than a couple of different vantage points, the disassembly/reassembly time of a rail type view camera can be significant.

In a shot like this one it doesn't really matter but, if you want your buildings to be upright, and personally I hate to see photos of buildings where the verticals are slightly off, then you either have to shoot from a higher vantage point or you ...
