Vector image - Images created using mathematical statements that define geometric shapes. You can move, resize, and change the color of vector graphics without losing any quality. Unlike bitmaps, vector graphics are not dependent on resolution.

Autotracing
The process of converting a bit-mapped image (or raster image) into a vector image. In a bit-mapped image, each object is represented by a pattern of dots, while in a vector image every object is defined geometrically.
Vector images or objects are compact (since they are a description rather than actual pixels), provide clean and crisp edges, and are infinitely saleable without being subject to the interpolation artifacts seen in bitmaps.
Software used by high-end postscript printers that prepares the file to be printed by converting vector images into a bitmaps.

Vector images map the outlines of an image and fill in the areas inside the mapped areas with color. This is the kind of image produced in 'draw' and 'illustration' programs like Adobe Illustrator and Corel Draw.
