View camera lenses are designed with both focal length and coverage in mind - a 300 mm lens may give a different angle of view (either over 31° or over 57°) depending on whether it was designed to cover a 4Ã-5 or 8Ã-10 image area.

View Cameras
Not too many photographers start with a 4x5" view camera, but that is rather a shame. View cameras are the most flexible cameras, usually made from a basic design that has not changed for over 100 years.

View Camera
Though mechanically simple (the "body" itself is little more than a light-tight box) comapred to modern SLRs and digital cameras, the view camera can make stunningly beautiful images in the right hands.

The view camera views directly from the lens. The image is focused onto a ground-glass plate. The glass is then replaced by a film holder to capture an image. The view camera offers extreme image control.

View Camera: A style of camera consisting of a bellows connecting a lens support and film holder, mounted on a rail or pair of rails.

Movements

And would you believe that the late and great Edward Weston photographed his many very active cats with an 8x10 view camera? Not in studio setups, mind you, but roaming around his house and yard.

When you put a 4×5 back on an 8×10 view camera, or a 120 back on a 4×5, you simply looked at the ground glass and recomposed your picture or changed lenses or both.
