Selecting your viewpoint, the position from which you photograph the subject, is a very important part of composition and one that some people pay very little attention to.

Select a viewpoint that eliminates distractions so the principal subject is readily recognized.

The proper viewpoint or camera angle is an important factor in good composition.

Viewpoint
a) A high viewpoint, looking down works occasionally. It is good for symmetrical animals or plants and for patterns.
b) A low viewpoint, looking up does two things. Gets rid of fussy backgrounds. Gives the subject power and dominance.

Viewpoint
The most important consideration is the viewpoint. Before you even touch your camera you want to know what is it that you want to photograph and how you want to present it.

The position of the viewer can strongly influence the esthetics of an image, even if the subject is entirely imaginary and viewed "within the mind's eye".

Viewpoint is the position of the camera in relation to the subject.
Vignetting is a printing technique where the edges of the picture are gradually faded out to black or white.

I know my viewpoint may not be similar to other people here, but it's here. P&S cameras may be great for "consumer" shots (i.e vacations, family gatherings, etc.) but in professional photography, nothing beats an SLR or TLR.

Look for viewpoints
Once you have worked out the angle, then look for different viewpoints. Rather than just shooting everything from the same height, look for higher and lower points of view.

The user's viewpoint. They will see the entire page as the organisation's, and department's, website.

Experiment with viewpoints- i.e. get down on a child or flower's level or even lie on the ground to create an interesting shot rather than taking the picture from above.

1) Keep your viewpoint options open by experimenting with camera angles. When shooting classic spiral stairways, for example, try pointing your camera upward from below, then downward from above.

I would like to counter Bill's warning with another viewpoint. I don't doubt Bill's observation that his Mamiya 7 images show better sharpness than his SymmarXL.

What we're really most interested in from a photographic viewpoint is the Field of View. If we want a wideangle shot we want a wide field of view (say, 84 degrees horizontal).

I've always found that driving a car around to scenic viewpoints and planting a tripod in the holes left by the previous photographer is a surefire way to come home with a collection of mediocre postcard shots.

Stereoscopic or 3-D images use two shots of the same scene taken from slightly different viewpoints.

Change your Viewpoint
If there is a safe access, consider shooting the falls from above the falls or even behind the water curtain. You just might find a great hidden photograph when you take the time to think differently.

Parallax is an animation effect that allows layers to move in response to a particular viewpoint. The effect is used to add a three-dimensional depth illusion to the design and make interaction more responsive and interesting.

I used to chase visions of other photographers. On my way to a viewpoint or to some location, I often passed some excellent photographs hiding in the landscape. Even if I subconsciously registered them, I did not trust myself.

When taking a photo of a group of people, try the shot from different viewpoints to get the most interesting shot.

So, instead of taking a picture of the "front", look for a viewpoint that includes some of the extra parts. And use these in the foreground.

It is a technique in which takes a subject and takes a number of pictures from the same viewpoint at differing levels of exposure. Half or one f/stop (+/-) differences are usually selected depending on the subject.

My photo was taken at Muriwai, near Auckland. Searching on Flickr I found the work of Anthony Ko. After looking at his photos I gained some good ideas about viewpoints and the potential of the location before I'd even been there.

Notice this was taken from an elevated viewpoint. Had I shot this from street level, the foreground people would have been blurred if I focused on the middle of the crowd.

Now click on the Manual tab. Experiment with the Vertical slider to correct the vertical perspective, depending on the camera's original viewpoint. Be sure to line up the verticals with the grid overlay.

You can always delete the rejects. Take photos both in vertical and horizontal format. Experiment with shooting at eye level, and from a high or low viewpoint. Move yourself around to get the most interesting shot.

You can try wideangle lenses, fisheye lenses, telephoto lenses, macro lenses, and converters (if you own an advanced point and shoot). Here are a few ways you can use these attachments to shift your viewpoint.
