The three tanks (Developer, Stop bath, and Fixer) are placed in a tempered water bath. An inexpensive plastic dishwashing tub seems to work very well for this purpose. Each tank contains one liter of solution.

-Pre-soak - preparatory water bath for film or paper prior to processing that prevents uneven development. It is essential in some color processes.

I use a temp controlled water bath and get consistent development with Tmax. I've used Tech Pan for lens testing (developed in Microphen diluted 1:5) but prefer APX 25 for virtually grainless prints because it's cheaper and easier to use.

Ensure that you prepare sufficient volumes to completely cover the film in the tank. The required volume can often be found stamped on the tank somewhere, usually on the base. In place of a Stop bath you can use a water bath although it is not as ...
