Traditionally, a watermark was a mark or design placed on paper that was produced by the creation of a variation in the thickness of the paper. Watermarks were only visible only when the paper was held up against light.

Watermark - An embedded graphic in paper or a digital image that is typically used as a security or copyright precaution.

Watermark   A logo or mark that is superimposed on an image. Preview images are watermarked because they can be saved from the browser without purchase. Hi-resolution images purchased by the buyer are not watermarked.

Watermark - A term adapted from the printing industry, which involves superimposing a recognizable image, pattern, or words so that the parts of the image it covers appear lighter or darker that the rest of the image.

jQuery Watermarks for Inputfields
Did you ever see some input fields that have a description tag in it and as soon as you click into them, in order to write something, the description disappears? That's exactly what this jQuery plugin does for you.

Watermarks are faint designs embedded in a paper when it is made, often to indicate the maker or brand. The translucent design or name is visible when you hold a sheet up to the light.

Fashion photography tends to be a credible watermark of beauty ideals of a given era, as well as an indicator of the political and social climate.
