Many wide angle lenses also give you the option of using a normal focal length. Normal focal lengths are considered as those being within the range of 28mm to 50mm.

Why choose a wide angle?

WIDE ANGLE & VERTICAL CAMERA TITLE - If you attempt to 'zoom' the camera to a wide angle, then tilt the camera on its vertical side and lock the exposure, it will make the objects which are the central image, appear smaller and less detailed.

Ultra-wide angle lens.
Extra-wide angle lens, usually those with an angle of view greater than 90°. For 35 mm cameras the description usually applies to lenses of shorter focal length than about 24 mm.

Try a Wide Angle Lens - One of the techniques is using a wider angle lens. This allows you to get in close (point 3) but also fit in a lot of the pet.

Wide Angle Lenses: Wide angle lenses distort perspective (actually, it is not the lens but the way that it is used that causes the distortion of perspective).

Wide angle lenses are more susceptible to the problem of vignetting than other types of lenses. For that reason filter makers often make low-profile or slimline filters for use with wide angle lenses.

1) Wide Angle
You will tend to use the wide angle more often than your telephoto setting.

Since wide angles open up perspective they should not be used for close up portraits as the facial features of a person will be distorted beyond recognition and you can be sure you won't make many friends this way.

A 24mm wide angle lens can create unbalanced composition very easily by taking the objects in front of the lens at close range.

Using a wide angle lens means that the camera is much closer to the subject than the subject is to the background. This exaggerates perspective and makes the background seem small and distant.

Above, a wide angle shot taken at an equivalent focal length of 18mm. That would be "0.5 x" on most digital cameras - you need either an SLR or an adapter to go that wide. This was taken using an FZ10 with a Raynox 0.5x adapter.

Short, or wide angle lenses, are anything shorter than 50mm, for 35mm format. Common focal lengths are 35mm and 28mm. Short lenses are available down to 14mm, referred to as a fisheye.

24mm - 35mm = Wide angle

Please note also that focal length has a direct effect on perspective.

Zooming the lens to a wide angle, or using a short focal length lens, requires fewer pictures to cover the same view but makes objects in the panorama appear smaller and more distant. You should avoid using fish-eye lenses that distort the image.

Ultra Wide Ultra Wide Angle is a "house brand" of Meade. These eyepieces are well corrected, with very large apparent fields of view, of 84 degrees. Ultra Wide Angle eyepieces are reported to be generally similar in design to Naglers.

A telephoto lens has a longer focal length and narrower field of view than a normal lens and have a shallower depth of field than wide angle lenses.

Wide Angle Lens: Any lens that includes more in the viewfinder than a normal lens is wide angle. Wide angle lenses often have a very high depth of field and can yield very interesting perspective shots.

A wide angle zoom and a telephoto zoom. The wide angle should start at 28mm and go to somewhere between 70mm and 105mm. It need not be too fast (= expensive). A typical lens would be a 28-105/3.5-4.5 or something similar.

Again, I recommend using a wide angle lens, say 28mm. Put your camera on manual and set the shutter speed dial to Bulb (B). This allows the shutter to remain open for as long as the cable release is locked on.

Once in a while I use a wide angle lens for portraits of children. It's a unique approach and gives a very different kind of stylistic look.

A moderately wide angle lens gives a certain amount of perspective distortion, the first shot in particular makes her feet look very big in proportion to her head.

Lens choices range from wide angle and telephoto to a wide variety of zooms and close-up or "macro" lenses. The major brands of SLR cameras also have extensive accessory systems that let you tackle almost any photographic task.

This means that if you mount a wide angle lens like a 14 or 17 mm on a full frame camera, it will result in a vignette at the edges of the frame.
