Zoom lens
A zoom lens offers a continuously variable focal length, normally without the need to refocus. A wide-angle zoom covers a range of focal lengths that include a wide angle setting.
Zoom head
An electronic flashgun feature that allows the flash coverage to be adjusted. Flashguns are usually designed to cover the same angle as a standard lens, so when a wide angle lens is used you may find the edges of the frame are darker.
Zoom Effect
In addition to offering you the marvelous convenience of being able to change focal lengths quickly between pictures, zoom lenses enable you to create a novel special effect by changing focal lengths during an exposure.

ZOOM: DIGITAL OR OPTICAL?
What matters is Optical and not Digital. You might have seen Digital Camera advertisements boasting about Digital and Optical zooms. Normally most of them come with a large number for the Digital Zoom.
Zoom Lens
A Zoom Lens is a camera accessory that allows a photographer to take close-up shots of his subjects. Similar to a telephoto lens, the zoom lens can magnify a subject anywhere from two to up to twelve times its original size.
Zoom Telephoto / Playback magnify
Press the 4-way controller up to zoom the lens towards maximum telephoto focal length of 108 mm (equiv.). In play mode pressing the 4-way controller this way engages playback magnification (up to 18x).
Zoom Range:
Zoom lenses have a range. For instance 70-200mm or 18-200mm. While the latter seems much more appealing, keep in mind that image quality is often inversely proportional to zoom-range (for the same money).
The Zoom - Digital point and shoots are still in their baby stages longevity wise but once upon a time most had a fixed focal length lens meaning there was no built in zoom.
Digital zoom is a form of false zoom employed in digital cameras as a marketing gimmick. A cropped portion of the image is upsized to the usual image size, and this was presented as a form of "zoom".

OK, so you want to be cheap. You want one lens to do everything and you don't want to spend a lot of money. Sounds like you need a telephoto zoom and a set of 1.
-Variable focal-length (zoom) lens. variable focal length from about 35mm to 70mm. They are usually small and lightweight. They are designed to be used instead of a normal focal-length lens, not to replace a range of focal length lenses.

A Zoom Lens is a lens type in which the focal length can be adjusted though a set range; i.e. 17 - 35mm or 80 - 200mm. Zoom lenses are able to maintain focus through the focal length changes.

An optical zoom is a great feature. We see no benefit to digital zoom ("DZ") whatsoever. DZ is just stretching a portion of an image captured by the camera's glass (or optical) lens.

Zoom ‘em up
Most flashguns today have a zoom function with focal range of 24-105 mm. Depending on the focal length of your lens, the angle of coverage gets adjusted to light up the subject sufficiently.

Flash Zoom
Flash zoom refers to how wide your flash will spread the light. Some flash units do not have a zoom option.

If you value convenience and image quality is not a priority then an inexpensive zoom lens, such as the kit lenses sold with consumer-level cameras, is fine.
Tip 6: Zoom In
Always bring along a telephoto lens when shooting sunsets. That way, if you suddenly have an urge to make the sun larger and more impressive, you can simply zoom in.
