Zoom lenses have a variable focal length, and virtually all digital point-and-shoot cameras and full-featured zoom cameras come equipped with a zoom lens.

Zoom Lens
A Zoom Lens is a camera accessory that allows a photographer to take close-up shots of his subjects. Similar to a telephoto lens, the zoom lens can magnify a subject anywhere from two to up to twelve times its original size.

Many years ago when I was interested in taking 35mm landscape and scenic photographs and printing the transparencies up to 16X20 inches, I used prime lenses because of their superior image making qualities.

If you value convenience and image quality is not a priority then an inexpensive zoom lens, such as the kit lenses sold with consumer-level cameras, is fine.
Zoom lenses on digicams work much like the ones on camcorders. There are two buttons. One lets you zoom in, increasing the focal length and narrowing the angle of view, while the other lets you zoom out, widening the angle of view.

2 Zoom Lenses and Focal Length
