Zoom Range
The focal length range from the near (or wide) end of the zoom to the far (or telephoto) end of the zoom. Zoom range is also measured with X, representing a multiplier. For example, a 35-105mm zoom is also listed as a 3X zoom.

Zoom Range:
Zoom lenses have a range. For instance 70-200mm or 18-200mm. While the latter seems much more appealing, keep in mind that image quality is often inversely proportional to zoom-range (for the same money).

Zoom range of 24-120mm (instead of 28-105mm)
12.1 megapixel 1/1.7" Canon CMOS sensor, DIGIC 5 image processor (new sensor & upgrade from 10 megapixels)
ISO range of 80-6400 (instead of 80-3200) ...

The widest zoom range of any camera in this review is offered by the Nikon Coolpix S9100, but the widest focal length comes courtesy of the Samsung WB210.

WHAT ABOUT THE ZOOM RANGE OF THE LENS?
Most digital cameras allow you to zoom in or out to change the perspective of the image. Be careful of digital cameras that do not have the word "optical" in the sentence discussing the zoom range.

When comparing zoom ranges, only compare the "optical" zoom range, the actual focal lengths produced by the optical lens design.

Lens converters extend the zoom range of cameras with a fixed zoom lens that cannot be removed. These converters screw in, or slide onto the zoom lens. One problem with these lenses is that they are camera-specific.

8 throughout the entire zoom range, making it ideal for many types of photography such as portraiture and landscapes. The OS function offers the use of shutter speeds approximately four stops slower than would otherwise be possible.

On any film camera, any 50mm lens gives you the same field of view as any other, and any 28-105mm lens would give you the same zoom range as any other, for example.

Bridge cameras often have superzoom lenses which provide a very wide zoom range, typically between 10:1 and 18:1, which is attained at the cost of some distortions, including barrel and pincushion distortion, ...

This can be often seen in zoom lenses at both ends of the zoom range, straight lines at the edge of the frame will appear slightly curved.

So to simulate a longer zoom range or merely to save costs in the optical design, most small point and shoot cameras supplement what they can really do with what they call digital zoom.

Middle school (grades 5-8): These kids are ready for low-end point-and-shoots that may offer a modest zoom range and a variety of shooting modes.

6 APO prime, or those who will be shooting mostly at the sort end of the zoom range. No for serious shooters who intend to market their work or who are critical of image quality and will be shooting at the long end of the zoom range.

If you want a bigger zoom range, you're going to have to get a digital SLR. The lens that comes with most point and shoot cameras usually doesn't allow you to zoom in past 2x magnification.

Optical zoom are lenses that have many focal lengths within their zoom range. A wide-angle lens on a 35mm format camera is a lens with focal length below 32mm which gives you a wide or broad view and takes great scenic or landscape shots.

Lenses are usually not interchangeable, but some models have a wide zoom range. The regular zoom range (optical zoom) can be enhanced by the camera's built in software (digital zoom), for a stronger telephoto effect.

8 aperture throughout the zoom range, Canon’s three-stop image stabiliser — allowing you to use a shutter speed of just 1/15th of a second in low-light conditions — and a high-speed, silent ultrasonic motor autofocus mechanism, ...

Take Advantage of Any Zoom Range.
If you've equipped yourself with a 24-70mm zoom lens or similar focal length range, then use whatever telephoto length you have to record the chatter and interaction of guests from a bit of a distance.

Smaller sensors require lighter lenses (for equivalent angle of view, zoom range, build quality and aperture range).

The lenses offer a huge zoom range, sometimes as much as 20x optical, but the glass is generally of very poor quality and images suffer badly, ...

Meds said that he/she wants one lens with a long zoom range (18-200mm), to avoid having to change lenses and to take on a cruise. There are no long zoom range lenses that are faster. Canon, Sigma, Tamron and Tokina all make f2.

Different flash brands and models offer varying zoom range coverage. For example Canon's 430 and 580 series offer a usable focal length range of 24mm to 105mm when used with a compatible EOS lens on a full frame (35mm) DSLR.

Optical zoom lenses on digicams are usually non-interchangeable, which means that you have to choose a camera with a zoom range that suits your sort of photography.

New SLR-like models have good optics with very long zoom ranges. You should however know it is not possible to chance the lens on such a camera if you later find the zoom range is to narrow for your needs.

The common characteristic of a zoom lens is that is shows barrel distortions at the wide end of its zoom range and pincushion distortions at the long end. Somewhere in between there's usually a small range that is free of distortions.

For those using housed cameras, a wide-angle zoom is often the best choice, usually with at least 20mm (94 degrees) at the wide end of the zoom range.

Image quality stays high throughout the zoom range. Digital zoom simply crops the image to a smaller size, then enlarges the cropped portion to fill the frame again.

Distortion primarily affects zoom lenses that can cover a wide angle (including wide-to-tele zooms, going away and reversing direction toward the middle of the zoom range).

The amazing zoom range allows any subject to be captured with ease, from high-speed action at the racetrack to distant wildlife on the African plains and abstract close-ups.

Zoom Lens: A lens that incorporates a range of focal lengths. A 'standard' zoom range will often go from wide angle to telephoto.

P&S cameras come with either zoom lenses, usually ranging from wide angles of ~30mm to zoom ranges of upwards of ~200mm in the more expensive ranges. Typical P&S camera are 38mm-70mm or 38mm-120mm.

These lenses usually offer a fairly wide zoom range from wide angle through telephoto, and macro capability.

A 38mm to 115mm looks great in the shop and is often very handy, however it is not often explained that most P&S let in very little light at their maximum zoom range. The minimum aperture may only be f11.

Some point and shoot cameras offer a fairly limited zoom range, for example, from 38 to 55mm. This is a slightly wide to normal angle of view. Others offer wide range from wide to telephoto, such as 38 to 105mm.

This is especially true when the zoom range is large, like in a lens that’s 18-200mm. The other disadvantage is that they tend to have smaller maximum lens apertures compared to lenses that have a fixed focal length. (See the 4th point.) ...

It's very difficult to build optically sharp zoom lenses, particularly those with a really wide zoom range like these ones. The lenses are pretty slow, with small maximum apertures.

In some cases, those lenses come in a zoom range unavailable in lenses made by the original camera manufacturer, such as 18-200, making switching from a wide-angle to a telephoto lens practically unnecessary.

It should also be pointed out that you mustn't use any intermediate zoom ratios such as 33% or, even worse, fractional zoom percentages. The blotchiness caused by Photoshop's arguably poor intermediate zoom ranges makes those viewing percentages ...

Outside the vehicle, we usually set the video camera on its tripod and let it record the action while we’re shooting stills.' Unless you’re shooting for broadcast, a consumer video camera with good zoom range, ...

The PRO 300's can be used with telephoto zoom lenses as well as prime lenses, but, due to their design, Kenko does not recommend them for lenses that have a zoom range that starts under 50 mm.

The popular 35mm 28-105 zoom range becomes the equivalent of a 45-165 zoom on a DSLR with a 1.6 focal length multiplier. A DSLR with a 1.6 focal length multiplier would require a 16mm lens to equal a 25mm lens field of view on a 35mm film camera.

make an effective background for trails or improve composition by providing negative space within the image. I would recommend wide-angle zooms for this technique underwater, and if possible a lens with a constant aperture throughout the zoom range.
