Aconite Newry Blue (Aconitum napellus)
Monkshood
The hooded flowers - an inviting, singular jewel-like blue - seem to be climbing the dreaming spires. The hardy flowers give off the aura of English country gardens of Burpee's imagination.

Winter Aconites are tough plants and can survive being buried by snow.
This sequence was filmed in my studio. The snow was taken from my garden and took all night to melt.

Aconitum napellus
( Aconite )
This poisonous perennial graces many flower borders because of the beautiful, hooded, deep blue flowers borne on spikes in mid to late summer. Foliage is medium green, highly divided and quite elegant.

In the 1600s, John Gerard thought the yellow-flowering aconites were a good counter measure to the highly poisonous blue-flowering ones in the same genus.

Snowdrop, usually spoken of as the first flower of our year, though the Winter Aconite has perhaps a better title to be so considered, has never been of much account in physic, and has never been recognized.

A light, frothy looking plant, this aconite has deeply divided dark foliage and masses of creamy yellow flowers. Its natural habitat is in deciduous mountain forests; so it is suited to partial shade in a woodland site where the soil is rich.

Description:
Winter Aconite (shown here) and Snowdrops are the first bulbs to flower in Winter, usually opening during the sporadic warm days of February and continuing into March.

All kinds of bulbs planted and established to grow in natural conditions without periodic lifting look 'right'. Snowdrops, winter aconites, daffodils, anemones and bluebells look their best when growing as if they owned the site.
