Adam's Needle Yucca, Desert Candle
Large clusters of white or violet flowers bloom on these evergreens, which are stemless and can reach the size of small trees. Some flowers are fragrant at night.

Adam & Eve is a reference to the growth habit of the bulbs as the leaf and flower arise from the current seasons growth (Eve) while last years bulb (Adam), from which forth sprang Eve, is still present.

Mature Height/Spread: These very hardy plants form a low cluster of stiff, pointed leaves, 2½ feet long and 1 inch wide. The leaves have long, loose fibers at the edges.

Adam's needle is a great way to add a tropical note poolside - this yucca is very neat and has soft spines that won't needle swimmer's bare skin should they pass too closely (like some other, more vicious Yucca species)!

ADAM'S APPLE is a variety of the Lime (Citrus limetta). Superstition relates that a piece of the forbidden apple stuck in Adam's throat, and his descendants ever after had the lump in the front of the neck which is so named.

Yuccas come from Central America, Mexico and the southern USA and have been cultivated here for three centuries. They are exotic architectural plants that have striking lance shaped, rigid leaves.

Some authorities say that Linnaeus spelled the genus as Buddleja, and this is the way name appears in his Species Plantarum, published in 1753, in which the genus was first described.

So too in the Genesis story, whrein Eve but not Adam knows the secret of immortal youth from the Tree of Life, Adam is cast from the Garden (like Heracles from his temporary position on Olympus), but Eve is never said to have been cast out.

Several species are known as Adam's-needle, particularly those that are hardy and are cultivated in the North, most common of which is Y. filamentosa. The Joshua tree (Y. brevifolia) is a picturesque treelike species of desert regions.
