How to Grow African Violets - Saintpaulias
The modern history of the African Violet or saintpaulia began with its discovery towards the end of the last century by the District Governor of Usambara in East Africa.

These compact, rosetted, evergreen perennials, grown as indoor plants, can be tricky and may require some special attention. Heart-shaped leaves (to 2") are medium green and pubescent. Blooms are delicate and seem quite fragile.

African Violets are one of the most beloved houseplants. they are easy to grow and they adapt very well to home-growing conditions. They will thrive in a an average temperature of 73° during the day and not below 60° at night.

I received African Violets as a gift in my job. I never flowered until I bought it home. I have it on my window sill which faces North/North East and all of a sudden it flowered like crazy. Acuatlly, it hasen't stopped since. It just keeps flowering.

Related to African violet and enjoys similar conditions. Small, tender basket plant, quickly grows to eight inches tall with a spread of 12 inches across. It branches freely and produces soft, velvety green leaves that are about two inches long.

Over the years, we have found a few of the normally tropical African violet relative, achimenes, that survive in our Zone 7b garden. Achimenes 'Purple King' was the first and still one of the best, shared with us by former PDN staffer James Proctor.

The inert quality of these additions makes any of them especially good for pitcher plants or orchids, as opposed to ferns or African violets which also require a rich soil.

Streptocarpus sp. is related to African Violets and Gloxinias. They are easy to grow and require the same conditions as African Violets. Streptocarpus is native to Africa, Madagascar, and Asia.
Blooming Time: They will bloom intermittently all year.

Sinningia (syn. Gloxinia), Saintpaulia (African violet), Peperomia: Cut the leaves with the stalk intact from the parent plant. Using pots, insert with the base of each leaf just touching the surface and treat as for part-leaf cuttings.

Gloxinia are relatives to African violets and prefer similar growing conditions.

Flowers are blue to violet in color and reminiscent of the related African Violet.
Sow on top of a peaty soil in early spring, do not cover seeds, keep pots moist from beneath and in partial shade.

A water soluble liquid fertilize with micronutrients and is perfect to maximize flower count, size and bright color on standard African Violet varieties. Use 1/4 to 1/2 teaspoon per gallon.
