Agapanthus africanus (African lily; syn. Agapanthus umbellatus) is a native of the Cape of Good Hope in South Africa.

Agapanthus africanus (AGM): Half hardy, evergreen, acid soil, deep blue flowers.

The cultivar, 'Blue Giant' grows to 4 feet tall and 2 feet wided in clumps of evergreen, glossy strap-like foliage with flowers rising above on stalks.

As with most agapanthus, grow the plant in well-drain soil and protrect from harsh winds.

There is no difficulty to grow Agapanthus. Just move it to a frost-free room in winter. There it will need very little water until spring. In spring it should be brought back to a well-lit spot and started into growth by watering and feeding.

Agapanthus (Agapanthus praecox subsp. orientalis) has become naturalised relatively recently in the temperate regions of southern Australia. It is already well established in south-western Western Australia (i.e.

Many outstanding plants are perennial, either forming clumps, for instance the Agapanthus, or producing a single, soft crown, like the Impatiens. Some may be evergreen, others being herbaceous, dying down to dormant roots.

Orchids, fleshy-rooted agapanthus, shrubs, bulbous plants, and many others with expansive or exploratory roots can crack open a container. By contrast, when hibiscus roots reach their limit they start to suspend growth.

Blue lily-of-the-nile (agapanthus) is easy to grow from seeds. Plant in rich, well-drained soil and treat like amaryllis. The umbels of blue flowers come in two or three years.

Compare it with Agapanthus, Dracaena, Phormium, and Yucca, which belong to the same family. Cordyline is distinguishable from Dracaena, which it most resembles, by having three seeds per berry rather than one.
