Agastache spp. are members of the mint family making them sun loving, aromatic and drought tolerant. Agastache mexicana 'Kiegabi' has a beautiful, shorter form than other Agastache spp.

Anise Hyssop (Agastache anethiodorum) - A North American member of the mint family, the leaves have a rich aniseed flavour, delicious in salads. It usually comes out tops in tasting trials. Sow spring in pots and plant out when large enough.

In general, the Agastache are easy to buy and plant, but I have found none live more than 4 years in my garden, and some live only one year. Two or three years seems the rule. However, I have been planting them in rich soil and not dividing them.

Growing, Planting and Using Agastache Hummingbird Mint
Hummingbird mint or giant hyssop is a favorite perennial for xeriscaping because of the beautiful flowers and drought-tolerant nature agastache has.

Note, however, that Spanish toronjil morado purple lemon balm, refers to Agastache mexicana , another herb of the same plant family which has a superb lemon fragrance.

North American plants of the related genus Agastache are called giant hyssop and were used medicinally and as flavoring by the Native Americans. Hyssop is classified in the division , class Magnoliopsida, order Lamiales, family Labiatae.
