Red alder
Alnus rubra
A medium-sized broad-leaf tree, up to 24 metres tall. Trees growing in the forest develop a slightly tapered trunk extending up to a narrow, rounded crown.

Sitka Alder
There are about 30 species and many cultivars of the short-lived Alder. Most of these deciduous trees like colder climates and moist or wet soils along streams and ponds. Use in grove plantings or as single, multi-trunked trees.

A tough, fast growing tree for cold and wet locations, the grey alder has matt, veined leaves that are broadly conical with toothy edges and dull grey on their undersides.

Small deciduous trees, are often multi-stemmed and pyramidal, can also develop an oblong or rounded irregular crown. Bark is a lustrous gray-green in young trees, older specimens have a polished brown coloration.

Alder is an attractive, low-growing tree common along streams. Its leaves are toothed and often folded inward along the central leaf vein. Alder has small persistent cones which are actually remains of the staminate flower clusters.

This alder resembles our local white alder but differs in having leaves that are heart shaped, simple fine teeth, and blotched gray-green bark.

Witch-alder produces showy bottlebrush flower spikes in early Spring that are pleasantly fragrant and a wonderful addition to woodland gardens.
Culture
Acidic soil is a must for witch-alder; it will not tolerate limey conditions.

I thought Zantedeschia 'Schwarzwalder' (Black Forest TM) had the darkest flower until I saw Zantedeschia 'Black Star'...black flowers, black stems, and green leaves edged in black.

Alder trees also have a heavy leaf canopy and when the leaves fall in the autumn they help to build up the humus content of the soil.

Oaks (Quercus) are the preferred host, though other susceptible species include apple (Malus), alder (Alnus), aspen (Populus), basswood or linden (Tilia), hawthorns (Crataegus) and willows (Salix) are also damaged.

Alderman, Excelsior MN, 1933. Bush vigorous, much branching, roots most resistant to Armillaria, tolerates some dryness. Resists mildew. Tends to break dormancy early, with protracted bloom, some strigs ripening as others are still in bloom.

The plant also goes by several other common names, including striped alder and winterbloom. Another of its epithets, snapping hazel, comes from the sound its pods make when they ripen and snap open, shooting seeds up to 10 metres away.

Mistletoe can be found between tree branches (even those taller than 4-5 meters): poplar, willow, birch, pear and apple trees, hawthorn, plum, cherry, acacia, maple, chestnut, lime, or more rarely in ash or alder trees.

This tree has a very vigorous root system and will buckle sidewalks and clog drain tiles. Due to its rapid growth, the wood is weak and prone to storm damage. It is susceptible to many diseases and insect pests, particularly the wooly alder aphid.
