In early spring, before the new leaves form, purplish buds all along the grey naked branches open into small white four-petaled, almond-scented flowers with yellow stamens. After flowering, green, glossy abelia-like leaves appear.
Almond trees (P. dulcis), which are rather like peach trees, occur in residential areas, and fruit readily where cross-pollination can occur. The 'flowering' varieties have double flowers.

Several of my sources say the flower has a scent of almonds. I did a nose test and I wouldn't equate it to almonds. However, it did remind me of boxwood, but with a greener smell to it. One of my sources said the smell might be undesirable.
The leaves and inner bark of black cherry contain a cyanide compound that smells like almonds and was formerly used in cough medicines and liniments.
