Unlike most alocasia, Black Velvet forms a branched, rhizomatous stem that can produce plants up to 18 inches wide. It's usually less than a foot high. The thick, but brittle leaves are heart-shaped ovals about the size of a saucer.

Cultural Practices:
The Alocasia will generally lose its leaves in winter. They grow back at the end of March or during April. Feed weekly during spring and fall. June is the hardest month, because of the dryness of the air.

Alocasia, for example, should be kept evenly moist but not overly wet; it doesn't grow well when submerged in water, as do other types of elephant ears.

As common in the Deep South as buttermilk biscuits are the huge green leaves of a caladium relative, elephant's ear (Alocasia), which grows to 8 feet tall in rich, moist soils. It is hardy to zone 8.

They are often known by the common name elephant ear (which they share with the closely related genera Alocasia, Colocasia, and Xanthosoma), Heart of Jesus,[2] and Angel Wings.
