Alyssum is a genus of about 100-170 species of flowering plants in the family Brassicaceae, native to Europe, Asia, and northern Africa, with the highest species diversity in the Mediterranean region.

Sweet Alyssum, Alyssum maritima
Old-fashioned favorites, the dainty, spreading plants are covered with clusters of small, sweetly fragrant flowers. Bees love the lavender, purple, rose and white blossoms.

Alyssum are grown from seed. They can be directly seeded into your flower garden or seeded indoors for transplanting later. If planting outdoors, sow them after the soil has begun to warm in the spring.

Wild Alyssum is a very common introduced species that carpets large areas of fields and roadsides in the very early spring. Its stems are straight, flowers are tiny and bright yellow, and its seeds are flattened, round, and hairy.

This tiny three or four inch tall honey-scented annual erupted in disturbed soil on the roadside, from a packet of wildflower seeds broadcast early in spring.

Details: Full sun to light shade, soil rich in lime. Very drought tolerant. Surface sow to no more than 1/8" deep in spring after danger of frost is past. Attracts Butterflies or Hummingbirds.
