American Elm
(Ulmus americana L.)
LEAVES: Alternate, simple, 4"-6" long, unequal at the base, rather rough on the upper surface; usually soft-hairy below; veins prominent; margin coarsely toothed. Petiole short.

The American elm tree is frequently found in floodplain forests from the northern coast to the central peninsula of Florida (Wunderlin, 2003).

American elms are very much like the English elms on Salvatierra Street, but can be distinguished in spring by the hairy edges of the flat fruits. Two large trees in the backyard of 579 Alvarado Row are visible from Lane C at Campus Drive.

The cultivar 'Columnaris' has a wide columnar form with branches growing to the ground and is about 3 times high as wide.

American elms are highly susceptible to Dutch elm disease and the fact that this tree has survived probably has more to the fact it is located at the western extent of the trees range than with any inherent resistance to the disease.

An American elm tree in southwestern Ohio assumes its autumn color.
Description
The American elm is a tall and stately vase-shaped tree.

The American elm was once the favorite shade tree in the United States. It is large, tough and long-lived and, with its arching form, was favored as a street tree, as well as a lawn specimen.

Once a popular vase-shaped lawn and street tree, American Elms are plagued by incurable Dutch elm disease and insects. Elms also have shallow, aggressive root systems.

General information: Zelkova is often listed as a replacement for American Elm since it has roughly the same vase shape and grows 90 to 100 feet tall with a 60 to 80 foot spread.

The best trees in this important group are the English Elm and the American Elm. What we should avoid are some hybrids and varieties of these. They have many names, and some of them I have never noticed as making good trees.

The wood of an American Elm is moderately heavy, hard, and stiff with interlocking grain that makes it difficult to split but ideal for use in the production of hockey sticks where bending is necessary.
