Eastern Larch, American Larch
Graceful Larches are some of the few cone-bearing trees that drop their colorful autumn foliage. Once their clusters of needle-like leaves fall, the rose-shaped cones remain, dotting the branches through winter.

Larix laricina (American Larch, Eastern Larch)
Larix occidentalis (Western Larch, Tamarack)
Picea abies (Norway Spruce)
Picea breweriana (Brewer's Weeping Spruce)
Picea engelmannii (Engelmann's Spruce)
Picea glauca (White Spruce, Canada Spruce) ...

Tamarack, Eastern Larch, American Larch   LAR-iks lar-i-SI-na
Deciduous conifer, to 65 ft (20 m), narrowly conical when young, branches thin, short, spreading horizontally, spur shoots very short and black.

A western American larch (L. occidentalis) achieves a great height, and its lumber is used for interior construction, ties, posts, and cabinetmaking.

Don't confuse the tamarisks with American larch (Larix laricinia) which is often called tamarack. The salt cedar that has become a dominant, indeed overpowering, feature in much of the the arid western U.S. is Tamarix ramosissima.

Larix laricina: American larch, tamarack, hackmatack - smaller and hardier than the previous larches, the American larch grows to 60 feet, and can withstand zone 2 temperatures! It has finely flaking dull pink or pink-brown bark.

Other common names include Eastern Larch, Alaskan Larch, American Larch, Tamarack Larch, Hackmatack, tamarac, épinette rouge, violon (Qué), mélèze laricin, mélèze d'Amerique (FR), mýralerki (IS) ...
