This long-blooming, compact Amsonia selected from A. tabernaemontana seedlings at White Flower Farm is possibly a hybrid with the taxonomically challenged A. montana.
Amsonia (incl. genus Rhazya) or Blue Dogstars are very long lived, easily grown perennials within the Dogstar family (Apocynaceae).

Amsonia hubrictii 'Arkansas Blue Star is a spectacular perennial with soft, needle-like leaves that line the stems like bottlebrushes. The deer resistant foliage forms a perfect mound and turns bright gold in the fall.

Amsonias belong to the dogbane family along with Vinca minor and the common periwinkle. Like many members of that family, they have a milky sap.

Williamsonia is a fossil plant that thrived from the Triassic period through the Cretaceous period. Williamsonia was a bennettitalean (a cycadeoidphyte, a primitive gymnosperm that resembled cycads but was not a cycad).
Blue star (Amsonia), so called for its tiny starlike flowers, fits the bill perfectly. There's no doubt that this beautiful and diverse group of herbaceous perennials deserves more attention.
