The bark of the Apple-tree which is bitter, especially the root-bark, contains a principle called Phloridzin, and a yellow colouring matter, Quercetin, both extracted by boiling water. The seeds give Amygdaline and an edible oil.
By my advice some were planted against a west wall, in front of which grew some good-sized Nut-bushes and Apple-trees, so that in the hot summer weather the sun could only reach the plants for a couple of hours daily.
Fire blight, apple rust disease, black rot, and bitter rot can all be a problem as well as the following insect pests: aphids, red mite, flat-headed apple-tree borer, friot-tree bark beetle, codling moth, and apple maggots.
