APPLES - HARVEST TIME
Below is a list of apples and the time of ripening based on when Red Delicious ripen. For example, Gala with a listing of "-3" means that it will ripen three weeks earlier than Red Delicious.

Apples prefer a sheltered, frost-free position in full sun. You can still grow apples in frost prone areas, just choose later-flowering varieties or provide temporary protection in spring when apples are in blossom.

Apples are grown from seed. It takes several years to go from the seedling stage to an apple producing tree. Most people let the garden nurseries start apple tree seedlings and nurture them to a size that can be transplanted to your garden.

"Green Apples" is a cultivar of Aquilegia clematiflora (aka A. vulgaris "Clematiflora"). It is named for both its leaf color when the leaves first erupt in spring, & more especially its flowers.

Crabapples are small apples. The line between a small regular apple such as is grown in an orchard, and a large crabapple --is blurry. An arbitrary size often cited is 2 inches. If the fruit is smaller it is a crabapple, if larger an apple.

Apples are a popular fruit in much of Texas and, with proper variety selection, can be grown in all areas. Most varieties require cross-pollination, so, for maximum production, plant two varieties.

Apples and crabapples come in a profusion of varieties, most bearing lovely flowers and attractive, sometimes edible, fruit. They have alternate, toothed leaves, bear flowers in early to mid spring, and set fruit in late summer to early fall.

Apples are perfectly hardy in this country, but given the protection of a wall some of the finest varieties, such as ‘Cox's Orange Pippin', will succeed in the north of England when they would not do so in the open garden.

Take 6 large Red apples, wash carefully and put in a fruit kettle, with just enough boiling water to cover. Cover the kettle, and cook slowly until the apples are soft, with the skins broken and the juice a rich red colour.

Mayapples have umbrella-like leaves on foot-tall stems. Plants with a forked stem and two "umbrellas" produce a single flower in the fork. Queen bees frequently visit the flowers, as they are a very rich source of pollen.

Mayapples are a bit of a challenge to grow because they tend to rot easily, but they are well worth the extra effort. The leaves of 'Kaleidoscope' have distinctive markings, ranging in color from silver and light green to almost black.

Crabapples may be susceptible to fire blight, powdery mildew, rust, apple scab, several canker diseases, leaf defoliators, borers, scale and aphids.

Crab apples of different species grow wild from England to Japan and in America and have a long history of cultivation. Consequently there are now innumerable varieties of these reliable ornamental trees to choose from. Campus plantings include M.

Edible Apples and ornamental Crabapples have masses of spring flowers that emerge before the leaves. Hundreds of Apple varieties are grown for cider, cooking, eating, or a combination of uses.

Seedling mayapples spend their first four years of life with a vertical root system and just a single leaf. After the fourth year, the lower portion of the vertical root develops an axillary bud that begins to grow horizontally.

Uses
The apples were an important fruit for all coastal people, who harvested them in the late summer and early fall and either ate them fresh or stored them under water. Because of their acidity, the apples did not require further preservation.

Mayapples usually grow in groups and the shiny, slightly unusual leaf color makes them very distinctive and easy to spot. The flowers, on the other hand, hang below the leaves and must be looked for.

Apples were formerly considered species of the pear genus Pyrus, with which they share the characteristic pome fruit. The common apple (M. sylvestris) is the best known and is commercially the most important temperate fruit.

Crabapples are usually cross-fertile and freely hybridize, a plant breeders dream. The number of crabapple types (cultivars) is unknown, but it may be near 900, according to T. L.

Rose apples bruise easily and are highly perishable. They must be freshly picked to be crisp. Some studies of respiration rate and ethylene production in storage have been made in Hawaii. The fruit is non-climacteric.

Pineapples tolerate the reduced light of partial shade, and for the foliage effect, that amount of light may actually be better than full sun.
Moisture: Pineapple likes a moderate humidity but needs regular watering when in growth and flower.

This is the European crab apple which produces its rather sour apples in the autumn. The fruit is coloured yellow or red and is very sharp-tasting. The wild crab apple is not particularly ornamental and would probably not be grown in the garden.

Although many people plant crabapples, most cultivars are not really suitable for a small garden.

Strangely enough, pineapples do well in Phoenix. They do need some protection on coldest nights, but most of the ones spread around my backyard don't get even get that.

Top Fruit - or Tree Fruit - includes apples, pears, plums, peaches, cherries and other tree-grown fruit. More suited to those areas with a bit of room - though apples and pears etc can be grown in a patio pot, if the right type of tree is chosen.

Garden care: Keep the base of the tree weed free, fertilise at the beginning of each year and water regularly during hot dry spells.

Leaf: Alternate, simple, evergreen (older foliage turns red in fall), oblong to ovate, entire, 2 to 3 inches long, green above (with some silvery scales) and silvery white below and on the petiole, smells like apples when crushed.

Don't forget to throw a few of those apples around the garden as ground feeding birds tend to feel left out.

MEDICINAL: Apples are used to treat constipation. The pectin in fresh apples can help to lower cholesterol levels, an aid in treating heart disease. Crushed apple leaves can be rubbed on a fresh wound to prevent infection.

If varieties such as Japanese maples, crab apples, larch and beech do not have cold conditions, they will be unable to go through their natural growing cycles, and will thus soon weaken and die.

An infestation of fruit flies can ruin your apples, peaches, or even tomatoes. If you live in the tropics, fruit flies devour guavas, bananas, pineapples and most other fruit. But you can trap them…
