Strawberry tree (Arbutus unedo)
Puffy fruits the size of olives turn from yellow when young to red when mature. The fruits are borne at the same time as urn-shaped flowers among dark evergreen leaves.
Trailing Arbutus is by no means common. Sites are easily destroyed when disturbed by man or livestock and seldom recover.

Seed surface sown when ripe in some protected location, or in spring after soaking, in fertile, well-draining soil. Germination erratic. Grow also from stem tip cuttings in summer, or by layering spring or fall.

Resistant to oak root fungus. Must have organic soil with excellent soil drainage. Beautiful, striking California native. Sudden Oak Death manifested as leaf spot and twig die-back. Has Fragrant Flower.

The name Comarostaphylis is from Greek komaros (the Arbutus tree), and staphule (a grape), referring to the clusters of fruit. The name Arctostaphylos is from Greek arktos (a bear), and staphule (a grape), referring to bears liking the fruit.

Beyond the city sidewalks and the confines of the garden, Spring comes with the American wildings. For some it comes with the hepatica and the bloodroot; for some the fragrance of trailing arbutus alone is worth a Spring.
With the exception of a few berries, chiefly of a dwarf arbutus, the natives eat no vegetable food besides this fungus.' Indeed, from the 1760s onwards, sailing ships used the fruitbodies as food supplements.
