A. maritima is native to Europe and North America. It spreads to 1 foot wide, bearing leaves that are 6 inches long. It bears white to rose flowers in tight clusters.

The popular Sea Thrift cultivar "Dusseldorf Pride" has a brighter magenta or wine-red bloom than the regular species Armeria maritima on which the tight balls of tiny blooms are a paler pink.
