Both fronds and rhizomes have been used in brewing beer, and rhizome starch has been used as a substitute for arrowroot. Bread can be made out of dried and powered rhizomes alone or with other flour.

It is the source of 'canna starch' which is used as an arrowroot[1, 46, 171, 183]. The arrowroot is obtained by rasping the root to a pulp, then washing and straining to get rid of the fibres[2]. This starch is very digestible[196].

The root is toxic, but has been gathered & processed by cooking & pounding to obtain edible starch called Arum Arrowroot, with which to pad out wheat flour in times of limited resources or famine.

Houseplants: arrowhead vine (Syngonium); bloodleaf (Iresine); bromeliads, especially billbergia, neoregelia, and vriesea; calathea (peacock plant, zebra plant); cordyline; ctenanthe; and maranta (arrowroot, prayer plant, rabbit's foot).

They are vigorous growers and will reach 10 ft (3+ m) in nature, but usually reach about 4-6 feet (1-2 m) in containers. The tubers are used as food in the Andean Mountains and it is the source of Arrowroot starch in Australia.

None of its many products are harvested in Bermuda commercially. Specimens can be seen in the Bermuda Botanical Gardens east of the former Arrowroot Factory and near the St. George's Historical Society. Nice flowers.
