Wild Ginger
A ginger-like scent comes from these 7- to 10-inch perennials when their lush, heart-shaped leaves or spreading roots are cut or bruised. Flowers bloom in spring.

 


Asarum caudatum (British Columbia wild ginger, Western wild ginger, or long-tailed wild ginger) is native to rich moist forests of western North America from British Columbia to California and as far east as western Montana.

Asarina is Latin for resembling Asarum, or a Spanish vernacular name for the plant it resembles--Antirrhinum. The genus has had a few name changes; one recent change has yet to be recognized consistently around horticultural circles.

It is close to the genus Asarum (Aristolochiaceae). In contrast to its cousins it makes upright, short annual stems with rounded heart-shaped, pubescent leaves and small rich yellow, axillary and terminal, cup-like flowers.
