The leaves look a bit like those of an ash: pinnate, slightly pendulous and they turn a clear-yellow in autumn. The showier cultivars are more ornamental and thus perhaps more suited to garden use.
It is the most widely distributed of all the native ash species. It is native east of a diagonal line extending from Alberta Canada through central Montana to eastern Texas. It is common along stream banks, flood plains, and wet upland sites.
Additional Comments: Prickly ash bark was a toothache remedy for the Native Americans, who also boiled the inner bark to make a wash for itching skin. It was brought to Europe in the mid-19th century for the same purpose.

Description:
Green Ash, as compared to White Ash, has thinner stems, smaller terminal and lateral buds, and leaf scars with a "D" shape rolled over on its side (containing a lateral bud set on top of the flat portion of each leaf scar).
The bark is ash colored and peels off in strips. Oppositely arranged elliptic-lancelike leaves are 6-10 cm long, with 1 cm long stalks. Flowers are borne in large compound panicles, 20-30 cm long.
