ASPARAGUS
Asparagus beds properly made and fed should last 20 to 50 years! Dig a trench 18'' deep and wide. Place a 4" to 6" layer of manure and bones in the bottom. Cover with an equal amount of rich soil.

Asparagus
Herbaceous plants or climbers of the Lily order, of fine habit with elegant leaves. The vigorous and tall A. Broussoneti is quite hardy in warm sandy soil, and so are A. tenuifolius and others.

Asparagus fern is not a fern at all, but a member of the lily family. It is a close relative of true asparagus and is edible.

Asparagus Fern is a weed native to South Africa, which is very commonly used as an ornamental house-plant. It is an evergreen perennial herb emerging from a crown of tuberous roots.

Asparagus setaceus or Asparagus Fern, a native of South Africa, is not really a fern at all. Even though they are fern-like in appearance, the needle-like leaves are actually short branches called cladodes.

Asparagus densiflorus is a scrambling, slightly woody plant with upright or trailing branches up to 1 m long. The best known forms belong to the so-called emerald ferns of the Asparagus densiflorus 'Sprengeri' group.

They have a mild taste reminiscent of Asparagus with an added nutty bite all their own. They are excellent marinated in vinegar and oil or as a crunchy pickle. As a featured vegetable they will please the most demanding palate.

The young shoots were formerly said to be eaten, dressed like asparagus, or fried with flour and butter.
