Asters are an easy to grow perennial that grows well in average soils, but needs full sun. Asters come in blues, purples and a variety of pinks. All Asters are yellow in the center of the flower.

Aster oblongifolius, in reading the technical descriptions, is very much like the New England aster, but for a few minor differences. For one thing its range is different, occurring mostly in states of the Mississippi River watershed.

Asters are easy to cultivate, but powdery mildew can be a problem. To control the initial onset and spread of the disease, divide asters yearly in the spring. Replant the outer portions, and discard the spent center of the clump.
