The Autumn crocus is one of a dozen or more fall-flowering crocuses grown in American gardens. The light blue to violet flowers begin appearing in late September and October and grow 6-8 eight inches tall without a trace of foliage.

Types of Autumn Crocus - Meadow Saffron
Colchicum 'Glory of Heemstede' is a rich pink goblet shaped flower which stands up to wet weather quite well. The flowers - which are quite fragrant - are followed by narrow upright foliage.
Often called autumn crocus, colchicums are not true crocus, but members of the lily family-Liliaceae. In spring, the plants deliver up seven to ten-inch long, narrowly ovate leaves that remain in the garden, feeding the bulb, until July.
Colchicum species worthy of note include rosy-purple flowering agrippinum, and speciosum, the showy autumn crocus, that bears tulip-like flowers. Showy crocus blooms are initially cream-colored and gradually darken to a rosy-purple.

Autumn crocus can be naturalized in a meadow garden or allowed to grow through grass or other low growing ground covers. In fact, the ground cover is usually necessary to keep the flowers from falling over in rain and wind.
