Summary: Azaleas belong to the Heath family, with many varieties of striking beauty grown in gardens today. Like their close relative - the rhododendrons - they enjoy an acid soil.
Azaleas ( /əˈzeɪliə/) are flowering shrubs comprising two of the eight subgenera of the genus Rhododendron, Pentanthera (deciduous) and Tsutsuji (evergreen). Azaleas bloom in spring, their flowers often lasting several weeks.

Florist azaleas are NOT hardy in central Illinois and should not be planted outdoors for survival. However, they can be cared for as a regular blooming houseplant.

Azalea Selection
When selecting the type of azalea you want for your garden, ask the people at the nursery which of the many types will grow best where you live. Choose a sturdy, well branched plant that is obviously healthy.
Azaleas can be planted at any time of the year, even if they are in bloom but it is best to plant them in the early fall so they have a chance to adjust to their new home before winter freezes.

The western azalea is used extensively in breeding programs as a parent plant for many highly sought after hybrids, especially for adding fragrance. Some of its offspring include 'Delicatissimum', 'Exquisitum' and 'Irene Koster'.
This deciduous azalea has dark green leaves and funnel-shaped white flowers suffused with pink. The flowers have a spicy, sweet fragrance. This plant blooms very late in the season, and sporadically throughout the summer.
The Florida flame azalea has a limited distribution. It is present in Georgia and is rarely found in Alabama, Florida and Mississippi (Kartesz, 1999).

Azalea, a bonsai favorite, is the common name for the dwarf type Rhododendrons. Although a low toxicity plant it is best to keep children and pets away. Treat all Rhododendrons as poisonous.
