The banyan tree rarely is found growing in the disturbed tropical hammocks of Dade and Broward counties. It is native to India and Pakistan but escaped from cultivation. Banyan tree blooms year round (Wunderlin, 2003).

 


The largest banyan tree known is on the island of Sri Lanka. It has 350 large trunks and over 3,000 small ones. The banyan often grows to a height of over 21 meters and lives through many ages.

A single banyan tree will grow a forest of prop roots as it matures over a long lifetime.

There are a couple of members of the Ficus genus called banyan trees. These plants grow as epiphytes (a plant that grows on top of another).

Strangler figs are also known as banyan trees. The Hindus regard them as sacred because it is said that Buddha once meditated beneath one. Ficus religiosa is the sacred tree of Burma, Ceylon and India.

Pruning and wiring: Branching can be encouraged by pinching the stems. It can be pruned into a small tree over a period of years. Style as a broad crowned bonsai with the silhouette of a banyan tree.

Alexander the Great is said to have camped under a banyan tree that was big enough to shelter his whole army of 7,000 men.
