Barrel Cactus is a genus mostly native of Central and northern South America with a main distribution in arid areas in Mexico.

Golden Barrel Cactus
Large, round or cylindrical cacti with deep accordianlike ribbing and prominent spines comprise this group of Mexican and Southwestern United States natives.

Golden Barrel cactus (Echinocactus grusonii): Upright barrel-shaped green body is covered with heavy gold-yellow spines. The flowers are gold. This cactus is good for beginners.

Fishhook barrel cactus (Ferocactus wislizeni)
The flowers are pollinated by cactus bees (Lithurge spp.). Mule deer, birds, and javelina eat the fruit. The birds especially like the seeds.

The golden barrel cactus (Echinocactus grusonii), shown at left, is one of the most popular cactus house plants.
