For preparing tea, one tablespoon of bean pods is boiled in 250 ml of water for a period of 15 to 20 minutes. From this dietetic and anti-rheumatic tea, one or two cups are drunk per day.

The herb is also called Hog's-bean, and both its botanical name Hyoscyamus and the tenth-century Jusquiasmus are derived from the Greek words hyos and cyamos, signifying 'the bean of the hog,' which animal is supposed to eat it with impunity.
If you have seen a pea or bean blossom in the garden, then you will be able to recognize members of the Pea family. These are irregular flowers, with 5 petals forming a distinctive "banner, wings, and keel", as shown in the illustration.
One of the most stunning members of our weird but wonderful contingent is the coral bean, Erythrina x bidwilii.
Leaves and seed pods from white sweetclover can be cooked as a 'bean soup'. The pea-like seeds have been used as a seasoning for bean and split-pea soups. Young shoots, raw or cooked, can be added to salads or used as a potherb.
Purple locoweed is a member of the huge bean family (Fabaceae). Fab means "bean" in Latin. The generic name Oxytropis was compounded from the Greek oxys, "sharp," and tropis, "keel," in reference to the pointed tip on the two lower flower petals.
It can be separated from green wattle and silver wattle by having Leguminosae four (occasionally five) pairs of pinnae (the major segments into which (Bean family) the leaf is divided).

Very important: the red fruit skin and orange flesh must be carefully removed, and only a clean green "bean" should be planted. The seed inside the fruit is usually double, you may separate the halves - those are separate seeds.
These develop into brown, bean-like seedpods about 2 inches long. Each seedpod has 1 to 4 brown beans in it. The ironwood seeds mature at a time of year when very few plants are producing fruit. Wildlife is highly dependent on its seeds.
