Iris are an incredibly diverse group of bulbs and rhizomes, encompassing over 200 species and numerous cultivars. They range widely in cultural requirements, some are drought tolerant, while others require a pond to flourish.

With their swordlike leaves and showy flowers, bearded iris are an eye-catching addition to any garden. They're easy to plant, require minimum care, and readily multiply. Dwarf varieties make attractive edging.

Bearded Iris: These iris are identified by thick, bushy "beards" on each of the falls (lower petals) of the blossoms. They are divided into six groups based on size. The smaller iris generally bloom earlier in the growing season.

Bearded iris have a flower with three erect petals, called standards, and three drooping petals, called falls. The falls have a hairy center, hence the name bearded iris. Bearded iris do best in full sun and dry, alkaline soils.

The 'In Living Color' Iris is from the Tall Bearded Iris family. Tall Bearded Irises reach heights of 27 ½ inches and above. The stalks have many buds and branches and their heavy stems hold up well to inclement weather.

This standard, dwarf bearded iris does not in fact have variegated leaves, as the Latin name seems to suggest, but the flowers are bicoloured. Iris variegata and the many hybrids and cultivars derived from it are widely grown as ornamentals.

German Iris (Dwarf Bearded Iris)
German Iris are the types of iris which grow from roots known as rhizomes, which is a thick root stem.

Description:
Like Liatris, Bearded Iris blooms from the top of the scape to the bottom, which is the opposite of most perennials.

There are no chemicals currently listed for control of grassy weeds in bearded iris. Chemicals used to control grassy weeds will also damage the iris.
Mulch is not recommended as iris rhizomes will rot.

Flowering period is normally mid summer - the image above was taken 23rd June. As distinct from the 'Bearded irises' this group like to have their rhizomes below ground level.

Iris pallida (Dalmatian Iris or Sweet Iris) is native to the Dalmatian coast (Croatia) but widely naturalised elsewhere. It is a member of the subgenus iris, meaning that it is a bearded iris, and grows from a rhizome.
