Beardtongue
This native makes a stunning display with its brilliant white flowers against a backdrop of deep red foliage. Tough and easy to grow, it tolerates a wide variety of conditions including hot dry sites. 1996 Perennial Plant of the Year.
40cm, Pale Beardtongue is a perennial with broad leaves and upright stems with pale lavender to almost pure white, tubular flowers. It is native of rocky woods and prairies in the USA.
The Beardtongue name refers to the presence of a fifth stamen that in many species has a hairy tip or beard. The name Penstemon is Greek for five stamens.

About This Plant
Penstemon forms dense spikes of tubular flowers in early to mid summer. Flower colors include pink, blue, red, purple, and white.
Other indigenous wildflowers of the family include species of beardtongue, or pentstemon (genus Pentstemon); gerardia, or false purple foxglove (Gerardia) [for John Gerard]; painted cup, or Indian paintbrush (Castilleja); and figwort (Scrophularia).
Penstemon species' collective common name is Beard Tongue (also rendered Beardtongue, or Bearded-tongue).
