Bee Balm (Monarda)
Border perennials of the simplest culture, thriving in any soil, and suited for borders or for naturalisation in open copses. The red kind scattered through American woods in autumn is very handsome. M.

The Bee Balm plant, Monarda didyma, grows best in full sun but tolerates light shade, and will thrive in any moist soil that is rich in organic matter such as manure, compost, or leaf mold.

Description
Monarda didyma ‘Jacob Cline’ is a natural cross that was discovered in the south by plantsman Don Cline. It has the aromatic foliage and square stems that is common to the mint family.

Bushy clumps of 5 inch long, bronze-green leaves and tight clusters of long, tubular, lavendar flowers. A favorite stopping place for hummingbirds.

Collinson named the plant "Oswego tea" after it bloomed in his garden in 1745. The other common name, bee balm, came about when people used the flowers to make it into a poultice, taking the sting out of bee stings.

Bee balm, a clump-forming perennial, bears minty-scented scarlet, pink, or purple flowers in midsummer on branching, square stems. Leaves are aromatic as well. This native of eastern North America attracts hummingbirds and butterflies.

Bee balm's alternate name "Oswego Tea" was bestowed upon it by pioneer botanist John Bartram (1699-1777) who observed Oswego Indians using it for tea.

Bee Balm has a long history of use as a medicinal plant by many Native Americans including the Blackfeet. The Blackfeet Indians recognized this plants strong antiseptic action, and used poultices of the plant for skin infections and minor wounds.

These members of the Lamiaceae (formerly Labiatae) family are first cousins to Nepeta (Catmint), Mentha (true mint), and monarda (bee balm), to mention but a few.

MEDICINAL: Also known as Oswego tea and Bee Balm. It is used to treat nausea and vomiting, and cold and flu relief. The essential oil is used to treat acne, coughs, fevers, tension, stress, and depression.

Plants with spreading root systems include asters, bee balm, lamb's ear, purple cornflowers and many other common perennials. These can crowd out their own centers. Some can be invasive unless divided frequently.
