Purple Beech, Copper Beech
Beech's common name comes from a Saxon word meaning book. The smooth, light gray bark was once used like paper, and the wood used to make tablets. The trees' lofty, rounded crowns reach 50 to 100 feet tall and wide.

Beech grows slowly, and does not require much pruning. However, because beech does not produce secondary buds, it is important not to allow the internodes to become too long.

Beeches here are not valued for their nuts, since most of them are hollow, and squirrels eat most that are not. However, oil made from the nuts is said to be equal in delicacy to olive oil. Consumed in excess, the seeds can be poisonous.

This beech has a narrow upright habit, though the branches are weeping. This has purple young foliage and an interesting shape in its slender upright profile with a weeping habit, creating a pleasing combination of both the formal and informal.

American beech (Fagus grandifolia) belongs to the same family as the oaks, but, unlike the oaks which have diversified into many species, the beech is represented only by a single species in North America.

European beech is a wonderful hedging plant, as demonstrated in many English gardens.

LEAVES: Alternate, simple, 3"-4" long, stiff leathery texture, with a tapered tip and sharply toothed margins, light green and glossy above, yellow green below.

The American Beech tree does not like city living, probably because of the carbon monoxide. The American Beech tree has a shallow root system and likes bottom land, and upland soil.

Members of the Beech family are trees or shrubs, either deciduous or evergreen. The leaves are simple, alternate and often, but not always, lobed like the oak leaf shown here.

Red Beech derives its common name from its beautiful flaky papery trunk, initially copper/pink and becoming maroon with age. It has large leaves, and large yellow flowers. The open fruit reveal bright red valves and black seeds.

European beech is impressive in winter too, lifting muscular vertical stems skyward.
Description
The European beech is a large deciduous tree that can reach 100 ft (30.5 m) in height.

The black beech of New Zealand, which has no ancestors in the temperate regions of the Southern Hemisphere, is cheerfully known as Nothofagus solandri (from Greek nothos meaning illegitimate).

Deciduous trees such as elm, beech and oak have such attractive skeletons in winter that they should not be used as a host for clematis.

Tucked along the sun-dappled hillsides, within the leafless maples and beech trees, are carpets of woodland wildflowers. Look closely and you can see the blueberry colored flowers of the Hepatica with its blossoms set upon tender hairy stems.

Leaves, which are quite distinctive and lovely, are about a half inch wide and an inch long, much smaller than those of the very common Quercus gambelii.

Nothofagus solandri (syn Nothofagus solandri var solandri, black beech) is a tall, slender, evergreen tree that reaches 30-80 ft (9-24 m) high. The dark green leaves are oval shaped with a blunt tip, 0.3-0.

European Beech is a shade tree that is often allowed to retain its lower branches throughout its life, or it may be limbed up in youth. Its smooth, light gray bark is one of its best ornamental features, becoming fully exposed in Winter.

The form of the leaves is such that they conduct water inwards, not outwards as in the Beech and Arum. The Rhubarb leaves are grooved on the upper surface.

Occurs in Snow Gum (Eucalyptus pauciflora) Woodland and at the edge of Antarctic Beech (Nothofagus moorei) forest.
Grows within the crevices of basalt or trachyte rocks, mostly on cliff faces.

The mushroom grows in clusters on hardwood, such as oak, chestnut and beech. The flesh is meaty textured with a rich, smoky flavor and goes well with all foods.
