Virginia Bluebells is one of the more common wildflowers that is found in urban gardens, becoming sprawling with age and dying back to the crown by mid-Summer.

Originally applied to the wild English hyacith or Blue Bell (Scilla nutans); later used in Scotland for this species, also known, therefore, as the "Blue Bells of Scotland".

Called Ladybells and very similar to the Campanulas, they are but little known in U. S. gardens. The flowers are bell-shaped, blue, nodding, in erect panicles, or in racemes.

Common Names: Harebells, Wand Flowers, Fairy Wands, Fishing Wands.
History: The original form of Dierama pulcherrimum was found in the Eastern Cape province of South Africa.

They are commonly called "Virginia bluebells" and here's another rub when you use common names, there are probably 30-50 plants that have common names with the word "bluebells" in it and this leads to a lot of confusion.
