Lindera benzoin, commonly called spicebush, benzoin, or wild allspice, is another fragrant species found in America; its powdered berries have been used as a substitute for allspice. All other Lindera species are Asian.

It differs from the common spicebush (Lindera benzoin) by its narrower leaves rounded at the base and its distinctly veiny leaves, at least as seen from the under surface.
Habitat: Swampy areas, bogs, pond margins, sandy sinkholes.

At one time the fruit of the common American Spice Bush, 'Benzoin ' was used for this purpose.

Place several drops of aromatic oil on 2 ounces of fixative such as orris root or benzoin (congealed resin from the styrax tree) and gently blend this into the rose petals and spice/herb mix with a wooden spoon.
