Betony
Characteristics
The flowers can be a variety of colours such as yellow, purple and white. Each flower has an upper and lower lip, the upper lip forms a hood over the flower and the lower one has 3 lobes.
Additional Comments: The physician of the Roman emperor Augustus claimed that Betony could cure at least 47 different ailments. In the past it was believed to possess the power to dispel evil and to protect the wearer from 'visions and dreams'.
Pedicularis canadensis (Scrophulariaceae) - This member of the snapdragon family is also known as "lousewort". Although it is not related to the herb "Betony" (Stachys officinalis), wood betony has also previosly been used for medicinal purposes.

Swamp lousewort is a threatened plant in Connecticut. Swamp lousewort can be confused with a related plant, wood betony. Swamp lousewort, however, is a taller, more upright plant, and its leaves have no stalk or only a very short stalk.
Weeds that have not gone to seed can be added to the compost pile. Weeds with large storage roots like nutsedge, Florida betony or greenbriar should be left out and dried in the sun before composting to reduce their chances of survival.
