Big trees may not be as tall as coast redwoods but, with their greatly larger girths, may contain twice the weight of wood, around 1300 tons. The mass of such a tree is hard to appreciate.

Big Tree (Sequoia Gigantea) - A colossal tree in its own country, inhabiting mostly, in scattered groups or groves, the Californian Mountains for a distance of over 250 miles in length, existing trees being over 300 feet high.

This is a big tree, growing to 60 feet tall with a crown spread of 40 feet.

The hickory is a big tree with pinnate leaves. The individual leaflets are large and oval, turning from mid-green to yellow in autumn. The bark is shaggy and flaking.

I've found that in the average garden, the driest place is usually under a big tree. That's where my Cyclamen seem happiest.

Many of the maples lining our streets and country lanes are old and weathered relics of a time when big trees were the only choices.

Prunus mexicana is also called big tree plum and inch plum. It was named in May 1882 by Sereno Watson, in a disappointingly vague description, based on a herbarium specimen collected by Dr. E. Palmer in 1880 in Coahuila, Mexico.

(skwoi´), name for the redwood (Sequoia sempervirens) and for the big tree, or giant sequoia (Sequoiadendron giganteum), both huge, coniferous evergreen trees of the bald cypress family, and for extinct related species.

In big trees, though, there are a few large branches, each with a cluster of leaves at the end. Leaves are very large - no other tree in the area other than palms has larger leaves. They are toothed, long, narrow at the base, and broad at the apex.

The wild species, Thuja plicata becomes a very big tree, with a trunk up to 10 ft (3 m) in diameter, and reaching some 200 ft (60 m) towards the heavens.

The larger root balls of big trees can become submerged in water on a poorly drained site.

The Big Tree of Tule, near Oaxaca, Mexico, is a famous giant. Apparently formed by the fusion of 3 trees, it has a trunk circumference of 112' (34 m) and a height of 141' (43 m).

Big trees are hard to pick, difficult to spray safely and impossible to net from birds.

This willow is called "Giant" not because it will ever be a big tree, but because of the size of the pussies, which are very ample. Through the white fur you can see a purplish heart.

These can be picked off by hand, but in big trees and for large populations this is not feasible. If you live in a cold climate, winter will usually kill off these pests for you.

A Brachychiton acerifolius in San Juan Capistrano is registered as a California Big Tree. It measures 33 feet high, with a trunk circumference of 90 inches and a crown spread of 40 feet for a total of 133 points.

lf your place is small, don't plant big trees, such as maple or oak, which are hard to prune and eventually rob lawns and flower beds of nourishment and moisture, making their care more difficult.

Eucalyptus amygdalin (Labille ) is the tallest known tree, specimens attaining as much as 480 feet, exceeding in height even the Californian Big Tree (Sequoia gigantea). Many species yield valuable timber, others oils, kino, etc.
